This national chain stakes its rep on great pancakes, good coffee, and a slew of other appealing choices. The giant apple pancake is a revelation, and the 49'er flapjacks are a compelling option. Huge, fluffy omelets are oven-baked, as is the Dutch Baby, a scaled-down German pancake. Bacon is fabulous: thick, meaty, smoky, and not at all good for you.

We each ordered the Grand Treat -- a senior special of 3 buttermilk pancakes, 2 slices of bacon (or sausage) toast and 2 eggs. How Paul Bunyan, much less a senior, can finish this meal is beyond comprehension, but much to our amazement we saw several cleaning their plates. The pancakes were light and fluffy, the bacon thick and lean, and the eggs cooked as requested. Who could ask for more? Well actually it gets better - the restaurant is several notches above Ellis in ambiance and the service is faster than a speeding bullet. What you won't be able to do after consuming all this food is leap tall buildings. 4 out of a possible 5 Forks.
