- Lonely Are the Brave
- Thursday, July 30, 2009
- Often cited as Kirk Douglas’ favorite of his own films, Lonely Are the Brave gets a new chance to reach audiences with its debut on DVD this month.
- 17 Again
- Thursday, April 16, 2009
- 17 Again plays much like Big in reverse, with a touch of It’s a Wonderful Life plus a wish-granting old janitor thrown in for good measure.
- Alien Trespass
- Thursday, April 2, 2009
- California astronomer Ted Lewis (McCormack) tracks a fiery object to its crash site, where he discovers an alien spacecraft and a giant one-eyed, tentacled slug in Alien Trespasses.
- Friday the 13th
- Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009
- The original 1980 Friday the 13th achieved massive success by ripping off elements from Halloween, Psycho and Carrie. The new Friday the 13th seems content to merely cannibalize itself.
- Marley & Me
- Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008
- It’s a dog movie. If you’ve ever owned a dog—or seen another dog movie, for that matter—there is nothing in Marley & Me that will surprise you.
- What Just Happened
- Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008
- What Just Happened is not so much a movie about movies as it is a movie about filmmakers bickering and arguing.
- Nights in Rodanthe
- Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008
- Unfaithfulco-stars Gere and Lane re-team for this adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel about two troubled souls who spend a weekend alone in a North Carolina inn.
- Death Race
- Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008
- Anderson showed a satirical edge in his 1994 debut, Shopping, but brings his video-game sensibilities to this belated remake of Death Race 2000.
- Brideshead Revisited
- Thursday, July 31, 2008
- It’s no secret that this adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s celebrated novel originally had David Yates at the helm, while Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly and Jude Law were attached to star. Yates left to direct the remaining entries in the Harry Potter franchise, and the three leads were recast.
- Go Go Tales
- Wednesday, June 18, 2008
- Things are not going well at Ray Ruby’s Paradise. Ray (Dafoe) is four months behind on his rent, to an obnoxious landlady (Sylvia Miles) who keeps threatening to turn the strip club into a Bed, Bath & Beyond. The number of customers seems to be dwindling (“A business like this goes in cycles,” the club host (Hoskins) keeps explaining). The dancers haven’t been paid on time and are grumbling about a work stoppage.
- Hi My Name Is Ryan
- Monday, June 16, 2008
- Ryan Avery is a walking contradiction. The Phoenix native is actually in his early 20s, though he looks much younger. He sings in violent, controversial punk-rock bands that belie his Mormon background.
- The Black List: Volume One
- Monday, June 16, 2008
- Your reaction to The Black List will depend largely on your expectations for documentary filmmaking, though it’s difficult to imagine anyone not being at least intrigued and entertained by it.
- She Unfolds By Day
- Sunday, June 15, 2008
- Director Rolf Belgum has a curious eye, and a curious imagination, so it stands to reason that She Unfolds By Day is a curious film. Ostensibly, it’s a documentary about dealing with his mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s. Except that it isn’t.
- Cochochi
- Saturday, June 14, 2008
- After graduating from elementary school, two Mexican brothers are sent on an errand to deliver medicine to some relatives. They disobey their grandfather by taking his horse for the journey. Along the way they get lost; then they lose the horse and, finally, each other. The boys (and the audience) spend the rest of the movie searching.
- Young @ Heart
- Thursday, May 8, 2008
- Despite its title, Young @ Heart has nothing to do with Frank Sinatra.
