The article mentions that the closure of Enigma Garden Cafe might serve as an indicator of the general health of the arts district, then and now.
Enigma had survived its long growing pains and those of the arts district at that time. It was thriving when its financial base was destroyed through the calculated thievery of a single volunteer bookkeeper. Subsequent conversation with this man's family described a person who had, not figuratively but literally, robbed his own mother on her deathbed.
Longer old-timers in the arts district may recall a similiar scenario having led to the closure of the Purple House, a precursor to Enigma.
The only lesson to be drawn from the closing of Enigma Cafe is that no community is immune from the need to be wary of predators.
It's crises such as this that have inspired fair numbers of people to plan their first visit to Black Rock City.
