Steve, I think what Bavarian is saying (and I may be wrong here, but this is what I think as well) is that maybe the lies and stories stemmed from the fact that Roy's paternal love of this animal surpassed any need or reason to tell the truth, thus putting the animal in danger of being put down. It's like a parent whose child lashes out at him, and yet the parent will do anything to protect his child...because it's his child. Maybe he just didn't care as much about going out in a dignified manner than making sure his beloved tiger was protected from blame and punishment.
