Colbie Caillat

Breakthrough

Colbie Caillat - Breakthrough

Colbie Caillat is the musical equivalent of warm milk: bland, safe and best consumed when you need to get some sleep. If you indeed fell asleep somewhere around the beginning of Caillat’s second album, Breakthrough, and woke up somewhere near the end, you probably wouldn’t even notice you’d missed anything. The poppy singer-songwriter is so laid-back that her songs flow into a cloud of relaxed vibes, never trying too hard to assert themselves or stand out. Like a female James Blunt or Jason Mraz, Caillat sings about fuzzy, goopy emotions of love and positivity; her biggest hit, “Bubbly,” is about the feeling of having a crush on someone.

Nothing on Breakthrough sounds like it has the potential to be the next “Bubbly,” although “Runnin’ Around” and lead single “Fallin’ for You” (basically a lyrical retread of “Bubbly”) are reasonably catchy. But all the songs are equally or more insipid than Caillat’s previous work; dominant lyrical motifs include rainbows, meadows, raindrops and sunshine. It’s like listening to the inner musings of a fairly unimaginative 14-year-old girl (Caillat is 24) set to midtempo soft rock. You’d be better off taking a nap.
