Suggestion Box: A thought for the new school year
Thu, Aug 27, 2009 (midnight)
With school under way, here’s a thought: Teachers, administrators and, hell, even federal education bureaucrats—you take the achievement tests used to judge schools. We don’t suggest this as punishment. We mean it as perspective: So you’ll more viscerally grasp the fear and loathing a fifth-grader feels when she cracks open this thing. So everyone realizes just what it means to have too much depend on a stressed kid taking a test. If this is how we’re going to measure schools, everyone should understand the yardstick.
