Granta is good

The powerhouse literary journal Granta kicks off its 30th anniversary with its latest issue, showcasing fiction by established masters and up-and-coming young writers. (Disclosure: Weekly book critic John Freeman is Granta’s American editor.)
The issue packs a lot of heat, not least of which is an engaging interview between acclaimed novelist/short-story writer Jhumpa Lahiri and one of her literary idols, the Canadian writer Mavis Gallant. The 86-year-old Gallant talks about the techniques of her exquisite short fiction as well as her many years living and working in Paris.
Also on hand is a lengthy excerpt from Paul Auster’s new novel, Invisible, due later this year, and another heartbreakingly precise comic from artist Chris Ware. At 250-plus pages, Granta’s latest will keep your soul fed all summer long.
