As We See It
Can you watch hardcore porn on your vehicle’s DVD system, even if other drivers can see it?
Tue, Nov 17, 2009 (3:47 p.m.)
You’re driving home at night, and you find yourself behind one of those SUVs that come equipped with the DVD player and screens for passengers in the back seat. Occasionally you’ll find yourself checking out the movie—it’s kind of hard not to look, isn’t it? But this ain’t the latest Pixar film you’re looking at. That SUV is playing a porno movie, and it’s fully on view for all around to see.
Nothing you can do about it. Metro officer Jay Rivera says his office gets such complaints from time to time, but he tells people the same thing he tells us: “There’s no law that prohibits that.” Oh, sure, there are laws that prohibit the driver from watching a screen at the front of the vehicle while driving (in which case they’ll be cited for failure to pay full attention), but nothing prohibits passengers from watching anything they choose. “The content has nothing to do with it,” Rivera says. The First Amendment in action. Our founding fathers would be proud.
