Sex > honey toast (but just barely)

Exactly what makes this Japanese, isn’t clear, but what makes it delicious is obvious.

I take online restaurant reviews with a grain of salt, but when everyone agrees that a dish is so divine it warrants exclamation points, expletives and comparisons to sex, I yield to the communal will. And so it is with the honey toast at Ichiza (4355 Spring Mountain Road, #205).

“For the love of god/science ... get the honey toast, words cannot describe this deceptively extravagant treat,” writes Brad K. from Milpitas, California, on Yelp.com. “I would choose honey toast over sex any day, place, time or second,” says Bonnie L. from San Francisco. Anything that elicits that kind of praise is worth $6.95 to try.

The dessert arrives: a half loaf of fresh white bread, hollowed out and then soaked with butter and honey and toasted for the ideal balance of salty and sweet. It’s all topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, which melts into the core with every second. It’s comforting yet decadent; a friend and I tear at the golden mound, oohing slightly with every bite. I won’t say it’s better than sex. But foreplay? Maybe.
